OUR STORY

In 1956, Theartis Watts went into business for himself as a window cleaner. He procured his own accounts and developed his own two- to three-man teams. Watts Window Cleaning was doing business across the Philadelphia area throughout the 1960s and 70s.

In 1987, Watts began taking on larger janitorial contracts. The next year, he landed an account with SEPTA and suddenly had a much larger business. In need of short-term assistance, he turned to his daughter, Yvette.

“I started with the company as a part-time supervisor when I was in college, and my dad asked me to help him out,” Yvette recalls. She planned to work part-time for one year, inspecting crews two days a week for a few hours.

Father and daughter worked together for the next 10 years.

“I saw that he had more needs,” Yvette says. “I did the bookkeeping and marketing, was office manager and then general manager.”

Soon more work started to flow in. By 1992, Yvette was acting CEO, and she began transitioning the company from sole ownership into a corporation. Under Yvette’s management, Watts purchased its own building in Germantown and expanded into a range of related services, including carpet cleaning, post construction cleanup and groundskeeping.

“When my father passed in 1999, he left the responsibility of running the business to me and ownership to my mom,” Yvette notes.

As she proudly carries on her father’s legacy, her goal is to raise the company to another level before she one day passes it down to the next generation. To that end, she obtained Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification. More recently, she completed the intensive Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, which prepares entrepreneurs to pursue promising growth opportunities for their businesses.
